>Kapil drives 12 kms towards west and then 3 kms towards south. He then turns east and drives 8 kms. How far is he from his starting point?

A) 4 Kms
B) 5 Kms
C) 9 Kms
D) 10 Kms
Answer & Description: B) 5 Kms
Kapil is 5km away from the starting point.
Here AB = 12 km, BC = 3 km, CD = 8km
We have to find AD.
We have obtained a right trapezoid and have to calculate one of its sides.
Now, AE = BC = 3
and DE = AB - CD = 12-8 = 4
Applying Pythagoras theorem to ΔAED, which states,
hypotenuse² = base²+perpendicular²
we have
AD² = AE² + DE²
= 3² + 4² =9 +16 =25
AD = √25 =5
∴ Kapil is 5km away from the starting point.
